Mozambique’s Council of Ministers has approved the dissolution of the Baixo Limpopo Irrigation Company (RBL, EP), transferring its assets and management responsibilities to the National Irrigation Institute (INIR, IP).
The move, formalized by the revocation of Decree 5/2010, aims to streamline the country’s agricultural sector and improve efficiency. The decision is expected to enhance coordination with national agricultural policies, provide better technical support to over 21,000 producers, and reduce the company’s reliance on government subsidies.
The newly consolidated entity, INIR, is a public institution under the Ministry of Agriculture. It is responsible for the sustainable planning and management of land and water resources for agricultural production. The transfer of RBL’s operations to INIR is part of a broader strategy to diversify revenue streams and improve the long-term viability of the country’s irrigation infrastructure.
The Council of Ministers also reviewed several other key economic initiatives, including a final report on the creation of the Development Bank of Mozambique and the operational launch of the Economic Recovery Fund and the Mutual Guarantee Fund. The session also covered preliminary results of a food security assessment and the country’s economic balance sheet for the 2019-2024 period.
