Mozambique’s efforts to diversify its agricultural exports are gaining traction, with a major producer of macadamia nuts and bananas drawing praise from a top government official. On Thursday, August 7, 2025, Henriques Bongece, the Secretary of State for Maputo Province, highlighted the impressive productivity and technological advancements at a farm in the Boane district.
Bongece visited Bananalândia, a company with a 600-hectare plantation in southern Mozambique. He was impressed by the technology used in the cultivation of macadamia and bananas, noting the company’s significant contribution to local employment and economic growth.
Bananalândia has already exported over 600 tons of its produce this year, and it is a regular participant in the FACIM trade fair, a key platform for showcasing Mozambican products. The company aims to expand its international reach, with 80% of its banana output currently being exported to South Africa, Eswatini, Botswana, and markets in Europe and Asia.
Bongece encouraged Bananalândia to continue its production efforts and job creation. The company’s operations extend beyond Boane, with additional plantations in Goba and Moamba, covering a total area of over 1,500 hectares and employing 2,500 permanent workers. This scale of operation underscores the growing role of commercial agriculture in providing employment and boosting the provincial economy.
The government’s continued support for macadamia production is a key strategy to stimulate economic growth in the province, leveraging the high global demand for the nut.
