Mozambique and Zambia have launched the Chanida-Cassacatiza One-Stop Border Post, a development that promises to cut the time, cost and administrative friction that has long hampered trade along one of the region’s most strategically important corridors.

Under the new arrangement, travellers and transporters clear formalities for both countries in a single stop, eliminating the duplication that has historically added hours, sometimes days to cross-border journeys. The model has proven its worth elsewhere with the Chirundu OSBP on Zambia’s southern border with Zimbabwe, launched in 2009, reduced average crossing times from several days to under 24 hours.

The Chanida-Cassacatiza crossing matters because of where it leads. Eastern Province connects directly through this border to Mozambique’s ports of Beira and Nacala, two of the most critical maritime gateways for landlocked Zambia’s imports and exports. The Nacala Corridor in particular has attracted significant rail rehabilitation investment in recent years, making it a more competitive route for Zambian copper, agricultural commodities and consumer goods.

The launch was presided over by Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati and Mozambique’s Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation Américo Muchanga, reflecting the digital integration dimension of the project, which unifies the customs, immigration, and border systems of both countries into a single platform. Planned upgrades to the T4 and T6 highway access roads serving Chanida signal a broader commitment to building out the full logistics chain rather than simply digitalising a checkpoint.

For communities in Eastern Province, where agriculture and trade form the economic backbone of daily life, the practical benefits are tangible with lower transport costs, faster export pathways for farmers and reduced barriers for small traders whose livelihoods depend on cross-border commerce.
