Mozambique is redefining small-scale farming through PROMOVE Agribiz, an FAO, EU and government partnership that helps farmers transition from subsistence to agribusiness. Implemented in Nampula and Zambézia provinces, the initiative strengthens food security and rural resilience through a stepwise model by moving farmers from training to entrepreneurship.
Farmers begin in Farmer Field Schools, progress to Farmer Business Schools and finally form agribusiness associations. The programme integrates learning, finance and market access, with microgrants and partnerships supporting growth. So far, 413 Field School groups have engaged 10,742 members, while 183 Business School groups have trained 4,735 farmers, with women making up more than half.
“PROMOVE Agribiz is not just a project but it’s a blueprint for transforming agriculture into a driver of inclusive development and resilience,” noted FAO. By equipping farmers with knowledge and financial capital, Mozambique is creating a new generation of agripreneurs ready to drive inclusive rural growth.
