TotalEnergies has signalled its intention to deepen its collaboration with the Mozambican government on sustainable development initiatives in Cabo Delgado, the province where its major hydrocarbon exploration activities are based. A meeting between Minister Roberto Albino and TotalEnergies Country Chair and Managing Director Maxime Rabilloud last week focused on aligning the company’s social responsibility efforts with the government’s strategic vision for agriculture, fisheries, biofuels, conservation, and the environment.

Rabilloud expressed TotalEnergies’ willingness to receive input from the agricultural sector to enhance its interventions in the region. “The government’s vision is key to ensure better alignment of the initiatives underway,” he stated, highlighting the company’s commitment to working in partnership with local stakeholders.

The meeting culminated in an agreement to establish joint technical teams that will further explore and solidify the various points of discussion. This collaborative approach underscores TotalEnergies’ desire to integrate its operations with the broader development goals of Mozambique.

TotalEnergies has been actively involved in social responsibility initiatives in Cabo Delgado, aiming to stimulate development and improve the living conditions of local communities. Notably, the company established the Pamoja Tunaweza foundation (“Together we can” in Kiswahili) in May 2023, with a multi-year budget of US$200 million. This foundation focuses on promoting shared prosperity across the entire province.

In February, TotalEnergies allocated US$3 million to support the economic recovery of communities affected by terrorism in Palma and Mocímboa da Praia. This funding is designed to assist small traders, fishermen, and other economic agents in rebuilding their livelihoods, thereby revitalizing the local economy and improving the well-being of returning families.

Furthermore, TotalEnergies recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Cabo Delgado Provincial Government to define specific investment actions and strengthen public-private sector collaboration, aiming for inclusive and sustainable growth in the region.

These initiatives reflect TotalEnergies’ commitment to not only its core business of energy exploration but also to the sustainable development of the communities in which it operates. By aligning its efforts with the Mozambican government’s vision, TotalEnergies aims to create a more integrated and impactful approach to development in Cabo Delgado.
