Seed Co, a titan of African seed production, celebrated its 85th anniversary in Harare with a resounding commitment to research, innovation, and expansion, as the continent grapples with the escalating challenges of climate change. The event, themed “Keep Growing,” brought together industry leaders and stakeholders to chart a course for sustainable agriculture in a rapidly changing world.
Amidst the festivities, Seed Co Group CEO Morgan Nzwere issued a clarion call to African farmers, urging them to embrace Climate-Smart Agriculture. He underscored the company’s dedication to developing next-generation seed varieties that can withstand the vagaries of shifting weather patterns. “We are committed to shaping the future of agriculture by expanding into new markets, enhancing digital solutions, and developing seeds that address climate challenges,” Nzwere declared.
He emphasized that Seed Co’s growth is not merely about geographical expansion, but about tangible impact. “We have not only grown our footprint across Africa but have also continuously innovated to provide farmers with high-yield, climate-smart seed varieties tailored to different regions and farming conditions.”
Seed Co Group Chairman Pearson Gowero echoed this sentiment, highlighting the pivotal role of research in advancing agricultural practices. “We will continue expanding our reach, ensuring every farmer, big or small, has access to the best seeds. We will lead the way in agricultural innovation, developing smarter, more resilient seed varieties for future generations,” he affirmed.
Ngobizitha Ndhuna, the event’s guest of honour, lauded Seed Co’s enduring contribution to Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector and its broader influence on the global market. “Seed Co’s 85-year journey is a testament to what is possible when vision, innovation, and resilience come together,” Ndhuna stated. “From a single seed to a thriving agricultural empire, Seed Co has shaped the economy, empowered communities, and strengthened Zimbabwe’s place in the global agricultural landscape.”
Seed Co’s journey of expansion, beginning in the 1990s, has seen the company establish a presence in over 20 African nations, including Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, Botswana, and South Africa. This strategic growth has been underpinned by a commitment to adapting to local agricultural needs, ensuring farmers have access to seed varieties suited to their specific climates and soil conditions.
