The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) has ordered “Super Vega” cooking oil’s immediate market withdrawal. Though it has spread across the nation, the oil, which was manufactured unlawfully in the Nacala region of the Nampula province, has mostly been sold in northern and central Mozambique.
INAE said in a statement that an illegal economic unit failing to satisfy fundamental health and safety criteria was producing the cooking oil. Specifically, the oil was made without following the necessary quality control processes from the Ministry of Health (MISAU), and it lacks approval for its labeling, authorization to carry the “Made in Mozambique” seal, and certification for its nutritional content among other obligatory criteria. The inspectorate underlined that running such an industry is unlawful without these approvals.
INAE has also ordered its regional offices to promptly confiscate any leftover oil supplies and dispatch samples to a laboratory for quality testing. Given that an unlawful facility is producing the cooking oil, this covers testing for fortification criteria as well as general human consumption concerns.
