In a significant boost for sustainable development and the logistics sector in Mozambique, three state-of-the-art warehouses at Agility Logistics Parks (ALP) in Maputo have achieved a groundbreaking feat. They are the first in the nation to be awarded the prestigious EDGE Advanced certification, recognizing their exceptional energy and resource efficiency.

This landmark achievement, announced by global multi-business operator Agility Global, underscores a growing commitment to environmentally conscious infrastructure across the continent. The EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification, a globally recognized benchmark overseen by the International Finance Corp. (IFC), an arm of the World Bank, sets rigorous standards for green buildings. Basic certification demands a minimum projected reduction of 20% in energy use, water consumption, and the embodied energy within construction materials compared to conventional local buildings.

However, ALP’s Maputo facilities – encompassing the expansive 14,000 square meter Warehouse 1 and two 9,000 square meter warehouses – have gone above and beyond, securing the more stringent EDGE Advanced accreditation. This elite status is reserved for “zero-carbon ready” structures that demonstrate at least 40% greater energy efficiency than typical market offerings.

The numbers speak volumes about ALP’s commitment to sustainability. Their EDGE Advanced certified warehouses in Maputo boast remarkable energy savings exceeding 62.7%, water savings of over 40%, and the use of construction materials with a staggering 68% less embodied carbon compared to standard builds.

Neide Tsenane, the Country-Lead for Agility Logistics Parks – Mozambique, hailed this achievement as a significant milestone, not just for Agility but for their clientele as well. “The EDGE Advanced certification of our warehouses in Maputo is more than just a milestone for Agility—it’s a clear win for our customers,” she stated. “It reflects our commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure that supports operational efficiency, sustainability, and long-term business growth.”

For businesses already operating within these green facilities, the certification translates into tangible benefits: significant reductions in energy and water costs, a smaller environmental footprint, and the assurance of operating within infrastructure built to the highest international standards. Looking ahead, Tsenane emphasized the unique opportunity these future-ready and environmentally responsible facilities offer to companies looking to expand their operations in Mozambique.

Tsenane further highlighted the crucial role of quality logistics infrastructure in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), boosting efficiency, lowering costs, and fostering overall economic growth, ultimately leading to job creation and increased prosperity.

Agility Logistics Parks are establishing themselves as vital hubs across Africa, offering secure, interconnected, and round-the-clock operational environments. Their Grade A and Grade B, international-standard warehouses are designed with cutting-edge engineering and a strong focus on sustainability. Beyond the 320,000 square meter park in Maputo, Agility boasts a significant presence with a 470,000 square meter park in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire; a 160,000 square meter facility in Accra, Ghana; a 270,000 square meter park in Lagos, Nigeria; and the 270,000 square meter Yanmu East logistics park in Cairo, Egypt, a collaborative venture with Hassan Allam Utilities.

These logistics parks are attracting a diverse range of tenants, including both international giants and local players in sectors such as fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), e-commerce, technology, automotive, and natural resources.

Geoffrey White, CEO of Agility Africa, underscored the fundamental importance of safe and efficient warehousing for business success across the continent. “The ready-built Agility warehouses permit local companies to grow and develop, while reducing time-to-market and cost for new companies coming to Africa,” he explained. He further noted that the expanding network of Agility warehouse parks aligns perfectly with the significant opportunities arising from Africa’s growing population, rapid urbanization, and increasing consumerism. Initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), trade digitization, mobile banking, and improved data access are further fueling the expansion of African trade, both regionally and internationally.

The EDGE Advanced certification of Agility’s Maputo warehouses not only sets a new benchmark for green logistics in Mozambique but also serves as an inspiring example for sustainable development across the African continent, demonstrating that economic growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
