Across five sub-Saharan nations, a quiet revolution is brewing in the fields. The African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS) is spearheading a project to strengthen country-level agricultural advisory services in Burkina Faso, Malawi, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. This initiative, backed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), aims to unlock higher yields, improve livelihoods, and inject dynamism into regional economies.
“The project’s core objective is to bridge the knowledge gap between agricultural research and smallholder farmers,” explains AFAAS Director-General, Dr. Silim Toure. “By providing targeted, accessible advisory services, we empower farmers to adopt improved practices, optimize resource use, and ultimately, increase their productivity and income.”
The target countries present diverse landscapes and agricultural contexts. In Malawi, where maize production dominates, access to irrigation and climate-resilient seed varieties will be crucial. In Mozambique, cashew nut farmers require support in post-harvest handling and market linkages.
“Each country faces unique challenges, but common threads bind them,” highlights IFAD’s Director of the Rural Development Department, Pedro Bracia. “Limited access to extension services, fragmented value chains, and inadequate financing are just some of the hurdles these farmers overcome daily.”
The project tackles these challenges through a multi-pronged approach. Building capacity of extension workers, leveraging ICT for knowledge dissemination, and fostering public-private partnerships are key pillars.
“Technology plays a crucial role in reaching remote farmers and scaling up best practices,” emphasizes Dr. Toure. “Mobile-based platforms like e-extension can deliver valuable information directly to farmers’ hands, empowering them to make informed decisions.”
The anticipated benefits extend far beyond individual farms. Increased agricultural productivity can translate into lower food prices, improved food security, and economic growth for the entire region.
“Strengthening advisory services can create a ripple effect, transforming rural communities and stimulating economic activity,” underscores Bracia. “By unlocking the potential of agriculture, we create jobs, generate income, and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”
Despite its promise, the project faces potential roadblocks. Ensuring long-term financial sustainability and adapting to rapidly changing market dynamics will be crucial for success.
“Sustainability is key,” acknowledges Dr. Toure. “We must explore innovative financing models and build strong partnerships to ensure the continued delivery of advisory services beyond the project’s lifespan.”
With its focus on knowledge transfer, capacity building, and technology adoption, the Strengthening Country-Level Agricultural Advisory Services project represents a significant step towards a more prosperous and food-secure future for Africa. By empowering farmers and unlocking the potential of agriculture, this initiative holds the promise to reshape rural economies and improve the lives of millions across the continent.
