A wave of cattle deaths has put the District Services of Economic Activities (SDAE) in Bilene on high alert, as 21 animals have succumbed to a mysterious illness in recent days. The sudden fatalities have sent shockwaves through the local farming community, with fears mounting over the potential spread of the disease.
Gracinda Carlos, director of the SDAE in Bilene, revealed to Notícias Online that teleriosis is suspected as a possible cause. This debilitating disease, known to infect the blood cells of cattle, can lead to severe fever, anaemia, and ultimately, death. “We have sent samples to the laboratory in Maputo and are awaiting the results,” Carlos stated, highlighting the urgency of identifying the exact cause.
The economic impact on affected farmers is already significant. At least three farmers have reported losses, with one of the hardest hit being Dani Gaza Beef. The company tragically lost 13 prized Brahman cattle, a devastating blow estimated to be just over 1.5 million meticais. Given that Bilene district is home to a substantial 15,000 head of cattle, the potential for wider economic fallout is a serious concern for authorities and farmers alike.
As the community awaits the laboratory results, anxiety runs high, underscoring the vulnerability of livelihoods dependent on livestock. The SDAE’s swift response and ongoing investigation are crucial in containing the threat and safeguarding the region’s cattle population.
